FIRST PLACE

Vandra Pentecost - Ben

oil - 14″ x 11″

I was born prematurely at six months with severely impaired vision and a misaligned left eye. It was at a time when there was less acceptance of differences, so school life was difficult. Art provided a refuge, a place where I found solace and through which I developed skills to offset my difficulties. Leagally blind in one eye chalenges depth perception which is something I have tried to "see" as I work with the figure and portraiture. Vandra Pentecost is a conceptual figurative painter inspired by comparative religion, world culture and the the human spirit. In 2014 she received the Indianapolis Art Center's Skip McKinney Faculty of the Year Fellowship award which enabled her to expand her figurative exploration through workshops in drawing, painting and sculpture with national and international artists. Vandra’s award winning work has been shown in state and regional exhibits and a digital piece in the 2007-08 Lilly Oncology on Canvas exhibition, was chosen to hang in the international opening exhibit at the Royal College of Art in London, England, the US opening in NY, and traveled in the 2008 national tour.

SECOND PLACE

IMage

Bob Moskowitz - Jordan's Grandson

oil - 30'' x 20''

If there is power in the mundane, I attempt to record moments of human significance in the commonplace. The work suggests aspects of the human condition in context with the subject’s culture which can be revealed through observation and a peeling back of the layers. Although the subjects mask their emotions and feelings, close observation begins to reveal the specifics of content and meaning. The viewer is a participant in the un-masking of the innermost and universal motivations of people who would be otherwise be un-observed and ignored.

THIRD PLACE

IMage

Liubou Sas - Untitled

acrylic on board - 50 x 50 cm

I am a portrait painter and I paint mostly female portraits. Women's faces are my main source of inspiration. I see them every day walking in the street or sitting at a coffee shop; they are beautiful and I feel like drawing each one of them. I study the shapes and curves of their faces and the colour of their skin. They often notice me looking at them and probably think I'm crazy, which is partly true because there I am, staring at them while mentally painting their portrait.I create my work in two main techniques: a thick, expressive painting and my own technique which I call "stone washing" consisting of a curved, rough stone surface upon which I pour and wipe off coloured water to create soft and beautiful female images.
