Grey Cube Gallery proudly presents the second Nature online art show for the month of February 2021. The show encompassed a range of artistic styles and mediums (photography, digital, mixed media, oil on canvas, acrylic, watercolor, pastel, crayon, gouache, colored pencil, aquarell, graphite, bronze). Each submission has been judged based on the following elements of artistic expression: orginality and quality of art, overall design, creativity, interpretation of the theme, demonstration of artistic ability and usage of medium. Out of all entries, 145 artworks were shortlisted for inclusion in the show. The competition attracted entries from many countries across the world: USA, Canada, China, Taiwan, Germany, Japan, Sri Lanka, United Kingdom, Cyprus, Mexico, France, Russia, Australia, Portugal, Bulgaria, Spain, Ireland, Norway, Austria, Netherlands, Italy, Luxembourg, Sweden and Belgium. My commitment to the health of the planet has intensified as I learn about the perils of climate change. My intention for my artwork is to highlight the beauty of the natural landscape, as I explore and interpret the dynamics of space, light, and form. In nature, these relationships strike me when I see the gentle arch of a branch; a statuesque, majestic trunk; or a plant that spreads its leaves in fanciful directions. My goal is to compose artwork that demonstrates how these natural elements relate to each other and their surroundings. I create art that invites the viewer into the scene, compelling them to consider the natural landscape in terms of shape, form, and space. To fully express my vision, my work features a bas-relief / 3-D effect, lifting certain elements to emphasize the spatial dynamics of the composition. Most pieces begin with original photos, printed onto drawing paper. The photos are then mounted in sections, with some pieces elevated to interpret the dynamics of the space. I then draw into the piece, using graphite, colored pencil, and charcoal, to highlight and accentuate light, shadow, spaces, and forms, until my vision is realized.

I am a primarily self-taught photographer who began exhibiting my images about fifteen years ago. I seek to share images with which I has a strong and instinctive personal connection. Images may be simply documentary, invoke a sense of time and place, or resonate as an abstract blend of color, shape or form. Others provoke an indefinable question that does not readily yield answers without further study and reflection. My creative process follows an intuitive yet patterned path, searching for the combination of elements that produces an instinctive but undeniable connection. Most often the images that provoke the strongest connection are those that do not produce an immediate reaction but provoke a response through repeated contact and consideration over time. I have exhibited widely in local, regional, and national exhibitions, and my photographs were also selected to hang in the Michigan Governor’s Mansion as part of a year-long exhibition highlighting State of Michigan artists.

My art practice includes painting and collage. The artworks submitted herein are landscape paintings, inspired by the old growth forests of British Columbia, Canada's most westerly province. The flora and ecosystem are similar to habitats in the Northwestern United States, and other areas of the world that have rainforest environments. They share the same richness and the same vulnerabilities. Hiking our way through this particular forest not far from the village of Tofino on the west coast of Vancouver Island, we felt overwhelmed by the sensory experience of it all, the sounds, the fragrances and the glorious colours of the wild plants.Moreover, the experience is a humbling one. Nature is stoic; she withstands and replaces. Back in my studio, two thousand miles away, I approach my blank canvas and endeavour to recapture and reflect my impressions. If I have succeeded in conveying a fraction of the beauty, I feel quite blessed.
